- The first time I watched this movie, I thought it was just okay. Then, I eventually gave it another watch and then it's like a light switch turned on in my head. I LOVE THIS MOVIE. Admittedly, this one is better with subtitles because the accents are really thick majority of the time so it's hard to make out what is being said. Ana and Ralph's performances are top-notch. You really feel the weight of the trauma in this movie. It gives you JUST enough to keep you wondering what's next. Great cinematography as well! Eggers is a bit of a controversial director, you kind of either love or hate his films, but this one just gets more enjoyable every time I watch it.
- My quick rating - 6.5/10. The setting is New England in the 1630s. William (Ralph Ineson) and Katherine (Kate Dickie) lead a devout Christian life with five children, homesteading on the edge of an impassable wilderness. When their newborn son vanishes, and crops fail, the family turns on one another. Beyond their worst fears, a supernatural evil lurks in the nearby wood. A great looking and sounding movie that plays at the mind more for the horror aspect than it does with gore and loud scare moments. More of a thinking person's horror/thriller that plays out well in the atmosphere created. Even with the moderately short running time of just over an hour and a half, though, this movie seems to drag on quite a bit and may turn off casual moviegoers. Don't let that stop you from seeing a well-rounded film that comes at a time when the more gore the better is the norm.
- Wanted to revisit this after seeing Eggers’ The Northman recently. I’m not really sure why I only rated this a 3 on first watch. I really loved it on rewatch and could even see moving this to a 5. Anya Taylor-Joy is really incredible in this as is Ralph Ineson. Beautiful, creepy, and heart-breaking. I might need to revisit The Lighthouse now too.
- Making my way into Robert Eggers’ filmography, starting with “The VVitch.” Unexpected. While inhabiting a supernatural universe, the terrors are more familiar. The setting feels atmospheric and authentic. The portrayal of the American Puritan family seemed mostly accurate, partly caricatured. But the religious anguish is real. The dialogue is exceptional, the acting excellent. I’m not sure the subversive conclusion lived up to its own value system. Perhaps it’s about evil’s withering effect.
- The Witch holds a unique place in my moviegoing history as the first A24 film I ever saw. Even back then, Robert Eggers' extraordinary commitment to historical authenticity was impossible to miss. From the meticulously researched dialogue and production design to the decision to market the film as The VVitch—a creative nod to period spelling conventions—the film immerses itself in seventeenth-century New England with remarkable conviction. At the time, I didn't understand what made A24's films special or how Eggers created a realistic atmosphere without using traditional storytelling methods. As his feature directorial debut, The Witch remains an extraordinary accomplishment, immediately establishing the unmistakable filmmaking voice that would continue through The Lighthouse, The Northman, and Nosferatu. Despite my admiration for its craftsmanship, The Witch ultimately loses me somewhat in the direction it chooses to take its ending. While I appreciate what Eggers was aiming for, the film's final moments never resonated with me as strongly as the remarkable historical authenticity and slow-building atmosphere that define everything leading up to them. Even so, what Eggers accomplished on such a modest budget deserves enormous praise, creating a world that feels authentic in every detail without ever betraying its independent scale. Ralph Ineson delivers a commanding performance as William, while Anya Taylor-Joy announces herself as an exceptional new talent in the breakout role that launched her career. The Witch remains an impressive debut whose authenticity, ambition, and craftsmanship fully justify the acclaim it has received.
