- The Electronic State is probably the most spectacular film in Netflix history, a brilliantly ambitious, excitingly individual world in which the illustrations of the original work really come to life. If this world had been blessed with more captivating characters and a less predictable plot, we could now be talking about one of the greatest blockbusters of the year - so it remains one of the greatest, which is entertaining, but a little hollow
- I am not even sure why there are so many negative reviews on this film, I actually really enjoyed it MBB is such a great actress and Chris Pratt was pretty good too. I feel like the film was pretty much showing how real life is already playing out with people and their phones, maybe the future with AI or something. I’ve never read the book and didn’t know it was based on a book till watching the movie but I really enjoyed it :).
- I skipped watching this earlier this year because it was essentially, universally panned. And I probably enjoyed it more as a result. It has a decent sci-fi adventure story, decent looking visuals and a retro-sci-fi aesthetic, an alternate history / dystopian setting and a number of actors that I generally enjoy. There is definitely something that just doesn’t quite gel, though. And given the above, the most likely culprits are either the script or the direction. My biggest gripe with the film was the neuro-caster / robots. I thought they looked terrible, these tiny screens on the face to show the human. And while they supposedly allow you to be in two at once—you can be off enjoying vacation while your bot can be out working and being productive—it felt like they only ever show the person physically wearing a VR mask and manually controlling these bots remotely. Just kind of highlights the lack of thought put into the world building. Still I thought it was fine, but it’s not one I see myself ever watching again.
- This movie's getting a lot of hate because the budget is ridiculous, but I'm not interested in reviewing it based on its budget, just the final movie. Is it a fantastic movie? No. Is it a horrible movie? Also no. While it hits on a lot of obvious themes and does have some nice world-building, it also has a few things holding it back. The themes are explored mostly through dialogue, but just because the characters say something about their experiences doesn't mean it has weight. In other words, a lot more telling than showing. Two, there was a lot of potential for some memorable, wacky side characters to exist with their own mini-arcs, but instead they're all pretty forgettable. Lastly, it's incredibly predictable because almost every plot development is telegraphed way in advance. Even with all the negatives, it's a perfectly middle-of-the-road adventure with a coherent plot, a main character that has a motivation to move toward, and antagonists that make that journey challenging.
