- Outlander is a surprisingly good little epic, beautifully shot and much more ambitious than I expected. It blends Viking lore, science fiction, romance, and monster movie elements into a straightforward story with just enough detours to keep things interesting. The photography is often excellent. The early chase through the tents is especially well staged, and there are several shots throughout the movie that look far more expensive than the film actually feels. Some of the CGI has dated, but the real landscapes and physical sets give the world a convincing texture. The acting is generally good. Jim Caviezel has some very strong moments, particularly in quieter scenes, although I think the movie needed a leading man with a little more range and charisma. John Hurt, on the other hand, is operating on another level entirely. He can give even a simple line a sense of history and weight. What frustrated me is that the movie has three genuinely interesting stories competing for attention: the monster, Kainan as a fish out of water among the Vikings, and the romance. Any one of them could have been pushed further. The biggest missed opportunity is the relationship between Kainan and the Moorwen. Both are survivors of destroyed worlds, and Kainan eventually has to confront the uncomfortable fact that his own people helped create the monster they now fear. That parallel could have given the movie much more emotional and moral weight. Likewise, the relationships needed more room to breathe. I would have happily traded some of the monster pursuits and the Ron Perlman subplot for more time between Kainan, Rothgar, Wulfric, and Freya. The movie spends a lot of effort expanding its world when it really needed to deepen the people already in it. That’s what keeps Outlander from being excellent. The ingredients are all there, but the filmmakers never quite bring them together with the confidence or emotional precision of a Spielberg or Ridley Scott. Still, it’s fun, sincere, beautifully made in places, and much better than its reputation suggests. Basically: What if Beowulf had a spaceship? That alone gets you pretty far.
- This was a delightful surprise - a sort of mix between The 13th Warrior, Pitch Black, and Timeline. The acting was pretty good, and it had a great story. My only complaint is that this was the era of quick-cut action scenes - which is one trend that, thankfully, we've moved on from. This is worth the watch.
- Aside from the poor reviews, I had no idea what to expect from this one and only watched it as I'm a fan of Jim Caviezel. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised with it! This is a solid 3.5/5 movie. I really enjoyed it. If it were to be redone with today's VFX, it'd improve a lot. The non-monster scenes were really great though. I enjoyed the cast and their performances, and the Viking atmosphere. There was lots of well-timed comedy, and an epic sense of brotherhood. The soundtrack was really impressive, too - it gave me Hans Zimmer vibes. I wish we had more from Ron Pearlman's character! His introduction was awesome. I don't understand why that rivalry was hyped up and then suddenly just dissipated with nothing to it. Fun movie that I think I'd watch again. Sad to see it flopped at the box office, and seemingly most people dislike it!
