ショーン・ペン主演のハリウッドを舞台にした人間ドラマ。やり手のディレクターが愛を疑い、欺瞞やウソにまみれながらもしぶとく生き抜いて行く物語。売春婦役のメグ・ライアンにも注目したい。

Whoa... I just saw the reviews/ratings. I assumed this movie was highly regarded... tbf, I've not seen it in probably over a decade at this point, but... I loved this movie. I've seen it at least 3 times. I thought everyone was incredible acting-wise, I loved the script, I loved seeing this seedy weird shit & ditto for the relationships... I'll rewatch it soon with a friend I've been meaning to show it to & update this if need be... but idk I reckon it's a good 9.5, & I'm rounding up on that bitch.

Touting this hedonistic paean to bro culture -- whose sexual politics have aged about as well as co-star Kevin Spacey's reputation -- is a tough sell in our current age of wokeness, but I'll do my best. David Rabe's adaptation of his own play depicts the hard-partying lifestyle of Hollywood casting directors and roommates Eddie (Sean Penn) and Mickey (Spacey), along with their friends Artie (Garry Shandling) and Phil (Chazz Palminteri). These two guys have the exact same life: Same house, same job, same friends and same women. Only Eddie never stops fretting over the meaning of it all, while Mickey surfs through life with a smile and a smirk for everyone. Penn is quite good as Eddie -- he mines considerable pathos from this neurotic lost soul. But Spacey's hollow performance as Mickey might be even more pathetic. While Eddie feels all the highs and lows of life, Mickey doesn't seem to experience anything at all. He may be the one who's truly lost. Meanwhile, Palminteri nearly steals the film. He's never been better as Phil, whose frightening volatility hides the most sensitive soul of the group. Anna Paquin, Robin Wright Penn and Meg Ryan do their best to enliven the film's female characters, who are basically male fantasies. Paquin probably fares best as a perky young plaything passed around by the boys, while Wright Penn is typically drab as a woman idealized all out of proportion by Eddie and Mickey for the simple virtue of not being a bimbo. There's no denying Hurley Burley's misogyny. The seamless updating of Rabe's 1984 play to the late '90s proves how easily rampant sexism and white male privilege transferred from the go-go Reagan era to the age of Clinton. It's a guilty pleasure all right, but also a damn fun watch. And despite the script's regressive treatment of women, this is not a shallow film: It has thoughtful things to say about how elusive contentment can be, even for people who seemingly have it all. Eddie lives in an awesome house in the hills and drives an expensive sports car, his friends are a riot, his job allows him to snort coke at the office and coerce sexual favors from the most desirable women in the world -- and he's still unhappy? Perhaps this is a film only Billy Graham could love ... and me, I guess.
