- Brendan Stevens2026年9月20日1.5/5 stars. I want to preface this by saying that I may simply not be the target audience for splatter-comedy horror. If you love that genre, you probably aren't going to agree with my rating because we are going to axiomatically disagree on what a horror movie can be, what it should be, and what makes one effective. That said, I don't dislike deliberately stupid horror movies as a general rule. I loved Eight Legged Freaks. The difference is that Eight Legged Freaks tells you almost immediately what kind of movie you're watching. Dead Snow doesn't. I went into this expecting a relatively serious zombie horror movie about undead Nazis frozen in the mountains. Instead, more than 30 minutes into the movie, it pulled the rug out from underneath me and became a campy, slapstick splatter comedy. The tonal shift gave me whiplash. What makes that especially frustrating is that the movie begins like a genuinely good horror movie. The opening scene shows a woman running through the mountains from something we cannot see. We occasionally see the chase from the creature's point of view, but the movie never reveals what is pursuing her. That is exactly how effective horror should work. Your imagination is capable of creating something far more horrifying than anything a filmmaker can render on screen, so a good horror movie lets that fear percolate. It teases the threat, builds its mythology, and delays the reveal for as long as possible. Dead Snow initially understands this. It spends a long time slowly building suspense. Someone thinks she sees something outside. The characters hear noises. The camera lingers on the empty wilderness. Something is clearly out there, but the movie refuses to show it. Honestly, the opening does this better than A Quiet Place, a movie that blows its entire load by showing the creature almost immediately. Imagine if Cloverfield revealed its monster within the first five minutes. Imagine if Predator immediately showed you exactly what was hunting everyone. The mystery would be gone. Dead Snow initially avoids that mistake and sets itself up to be an effective, seriously toned horror movie. Then the old man arrives. He explains what the Nazis did in the area, warns everyone that there is evil in the mountains, and tells them that they need to respect it. His entire presence reinforces the idea that we are watching a serious horror movie. He seems knowledgeable, prepared, and uniquely aware of the danger. Naturally, that means he survives a long time, leading the core cast members to... just kidding, he immediately dies? A zombie silently runs past him in the darkness, cuts his throat, chases him into his tent, and stabs him to death. That was the exact moment the movie lost me. I remember thinking, "Wait a second. These aren't even zombies." They sprint, use weapons, coordinate with each other, and apparently move through the snow without making a sound. The characters even acknowledge that they're zombies and to avoid getting bitten, so we're leaning heavily on pop culture mythology to backfill our understanding of the situation. However, nobody who gets bitten turns into one either. So why even mention it? Wasted screen dialogue. Bad writing. They're essentially just undead Nazis who exist because the movie wanted Nazi zombies. Fine. But why? The movie spends several minutes giving us the Nazis' backstory, yet never explains why they became undead, why they are rising now, or what exactly connects them to the stolen treasure. It simply leans on the familiar trope of cursed treasure and expects the audience to use its knowledge of other stories to fill in everything the writers couldn't be bothered to explain. The treasure is cursed because cursed treasure is a thing you've seen before. The Nazis are zombies because Nazi zombies sound fun. That's apparently all the explanation we're getting. Even the old man's death feels like shitty writing. He is the only person who understands and respects the danger, so you would expect him to survive longer or at least receive a meaningful death. Instead, he is immediately discarded because he isn't one of the young, attractive college students the movie wants to follow. Meanwhile, the guy who laughs off his warning and disrespects him survives until nearly the end. There isn't any thematic logic behind who lives or dies. Characters survive until whenever. It literally feels like the director just wrote this on set while filming scenes. That problem only gets worse once the movie goes completely off the rails. Characters bite zombies back. People stare directly at the screen like cartoon characters before being knocked over. Someone who previously fought multiple zombies in hand-to-hand combat, fighting them while hanging from the side of a cliff later stands there and allows himself to be picked up and ripped apart. By that point, the movie has abandoned horror almost entirely and become an increasingly ridiculous parade of gore, dismemberment, slapstick, and people doing stupid shit. And this might be the part where you think, "Yeah. You just don't get the genre." No I do. I do get it. I just don't like that I got rug-pulled over half an hour into the movie and what seemed like a serious horror movie became dumb, slapstick horror. I like them both, but they don't work together; one is a parody of the other. This movie would have worked for me if it had established that tone from the beginning. If the woman in the opening scene had pulled out a shotgun, killed five Nazi zombies, and then gotten ripped in half by two more carrying machine guns, I would have immediately understood what I was watching. I could have adjusted my expectations and judged the movie as a stupid, self-aware splatter comedy. Instead, Dead Snow spends its first half presenting itself like a legitimate horror movie. It carefully conceals the threat, slowly builds suspense, introduces a knowledgeable character to establish the danger, and creates the expectation that its world should be taken seriously. Then it abruptly abandons all of that and becomes one of the dumbest fucking horror movies I have ever seen. Maybe fans of splatter comedy will have a great time with it. I didn't. I felt like the movie falsely advertised itself, asked me to take it seriously, and then laughed at me for doing so. The tonal rug pull ruined whatever fun I might have had with it. That's why I give it the harsher rating.

- jackmeat2025年12月21日My quick rating - 6.4/10. Dead Snow is the kind of movie that hears the phrase “Bad Taste” and just rockets a snowmobile right on top of it, thank the gods. Written and directed by Tommy Wirkola, this Norwegian splatter-comedy takes a simple premise and gleefully drowns it in buckets of the red stuff, and splatters it all over undead Nazis who refuse to stay dead. The setup is classic cabin-in-the-woods territory. Eight medical students head out on a ski trip to a remote mountain lodge in Norway, looking for booze, bonding, and a temporary escape from responsibility. What they get instead is a history lesson soaked in arterial spray. An early scene teases the presence of Nazi zombies backed by some Christmas tunes before shifting focus to the group, which turns out to be a smart move. By the time the undead soldiers march back into frame, you’re already settled in and ready for the carnage. Visually, Dead Snow looks far better than its budget might suggest. The snowy mountain landscapes are gorgeous, the glowing tent scene is legitimately striking, and the stark white environment makes every splash of red pop like a Jackson Pollock painting gone feral. When the movie needs to turn up the gore, and it absolutely does, it doesn’t hesitate. Severed limbs, exposed organs, fountains of blood…if you ever wondered how much viscera can stain snow, this movie treats it like a science experiment. What really makes this work, however, is the way that tones are balanced. The horror is quite graphic, but it is also a part of the fun. The Nazis zombies are automatically comedic characters. While the movie does not overdo the humor and make all of the other characters comedic as a result of the zombies’ presence, this ends up creating a believable dynamic. This allows the violence to be that much more shocking and the humor that much funnier. When panic sets in, it feels earned. When someone does something incredibly stupid, it feels earned, too. Horror fans will catch plenty of affectionate nods along the way. One character sporting a Braindead (aka Dead Alive) shirt is a nice wink, and there’s a very obvious - and very welcome - homage to Evil Dead II when the group gears up in a shed for their last stand. Add in snowmobiles tearing across the mountains, a perfectly chosen party song backing a zombie massacre, and a siege sequence in a remote cabin, and you’ve got a movie that knows exactly what it’s doing. Don’t expect a warm, fuzzy Hollywood ending here. Dead Snow commits to its chaos and leaves you splattered and grinning like an idiot. It’s an unrelenting shock-feast, laced with black humor and tongue firmly in cheek, delivering exactly what it promises. If you’re in the mood for stupendous gore, undead armies roaming the countryside, and a movie that understands that “zombie Nazis” is already a punchline, this one is an absolute holiday blast.
