On the whole, I like this movie. The movie picks up steam in the second half, which isn't a bad thing, but the first half seems droll. In the end, that feeling helps give the movie a certain feeling. A droll life filled with moments of horror. I think it works over all, but it may lose some viewers. Very much reminds me of bleak westerns like Cormac McArthy work, again not a bad comparison! Very much a compliment. But at times, the acting is superbly bad. From the lead woman and her husband, particularly. It pulls you out of the moment. Kurt does what he does, and Fox is pretty one note (theres a reason he isn't in more things!) The score in the second half of the movie is also great, im glad they waited so long to bring music in (i didn't notice much if any music in the first half of the movie). How did Fox lose a hand? There wasn't a native near him at the time he lost it. Unless I am mistaken. I think if the movie had some more money for a few better actors, I would have enjoyed this much more. I also think the beginning of the movie did not justify itself in the long run; it was merely a way to introduce us to a setting, a world, and especially Kurt's persona, and to be a sort of plot device to get the natives into the mix. We even get a throwaway line from Nick as he is dying (the natives let him talk it out for some reason?) to sort tie up the loose thread. Thats quite sloppy. I think the movie could have done all of those things without the cumbersome beginning.

Aside from all the weak stomached, new aged Disney fans that rely on pretty colors and $300,000,000 budgets in order to hold their tiny attention spans, most people will enjoy this movie. However, it is NOT a family movie, it is NOT Tombstone (where the blood and violence is toned down a lot and the storyline makes the movie) and it will certainly make you go "What the heck just happened?!" when the cannibal troglodytes begin hacking their dinner up while it is still alive. Great cast, great performances (RIP Sid Haug) from even the most wacky of the cast. (Yes David, I'm talking about you) Take a seat and watch this movie. If the first 5 minutes make your stomach quiver and your bleeding heart go pitter-patter, don't rate the movie half a star. It is not their fault you're weak.

Yikes. What a great addition to the sparse Western Horror subgenre. Some fine acting accompanied by shocking scenes of violence. The film looks fantastic and its no nonsense sensibilities are appreciated.

This movie was fun as hell. Corny, some bad acting, some good acting, underrated cinematography, brutal violence, shockingly authentic western moments, and a classic ending. Highly recommend.

    S. Craig Zagler’s filmography is populated by bleak and mean spirted exploitative features. Bone Tomahawk is no exception. What starts out as a paint by numbers western quickly turns into unique horror film unmatched by many in the modern era. Nice character dialogue keeps this slow burn moving forward with some great performances all around especially from the always gruff Kurt Russell.
