I actually really like how much more over-the-top this gets. It’s darker, bloodier and much more stylish, with Ridley Scott giving the whole thing this strange, gothic atmosphere. Anthony Hopkins is still fantastic as Lecter, and Gary Oldman is great as Mason Verger, probably the most disturbing character in the whole movie. Julianne Moore does a good job too, even if Clarice feels pretty different this time around. The Florence stuff is especially good, and there are some seriously memorable scenes. It obviously doesn't have the same tension or character chemistry as The Silence of the Lambs, and the story can feel a little messy with so much going on. Some of the gore also goes so far that it becomes almost ridiculous, but honestly, I kind of enjoy that about it. It’s more of a lavish, twisted horror movie than a straight thriller, and once you accept that, there’s a lot to have fun with. Not as good as the original, but still a damn good sequel.

Great cinematography! Beautifully shot. A completely different tone to the other motion pictures in the series. A must watch. A different ending to the book. Would love to know what the next chapter would be. Anthony Hopkins delivers an amazing performance, as does Julianne Moore. Gary Oldman’s Mason Verger is grotesquely on point.

Anthony Hopkins is back of course and on fine form. Jodie Foster is absent which is bad but instead we get Julianne Moore which is good. This time out, Ridley Scott is on board also which is even better. Leaning away from the other serial killer types, this time the film is more about Hannibal himself and his own murderous intentions (the clues in the title). He's essentially on the run of course and is being pursued by the authorities (obviously) but also by an old enemy - played here by Gary Oldman in a typically eccentric turn. Meanwhile the Clarice/Hannibal relationship is explored and developed to a certain extent.

For whatever reason, I watched The Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon years before I ever got around to Hannibal. The former is one of my favorite films of all time, and I thought Red Dragon, which came the year after this, was a very solid prequel to that world. Hannibal left me much colder. Ridley Scott pushes the material toward something far more theatrical and excessive, and while the European locations and Hans Zimmer's score give it some atmosphere, the story never feels nearly as compelling. Anthony Hopkins is clearly having fun with Lecter, but the character has become more of a flamboyant anti-hero than the frightening presence he was before. Jodie Foster's decision not to return as Clarice should have been a warning sign. Julianne Moore is perfectly fine, but I never felt the same chemistry between her and Hopkins that made the original so effective. The psychological tension is largely replaced by increasingly grotesque violence and a story that feels much too stretched out. I didn't hate Hannibal, but after finally getting around to it so many years later, I mostly found myself wondering why this was the direction they chose to take the character.

A tough sequel to rate. The beginning feels noticeably weaker — the calm, mysterious tone of the first film is almost completely gone in the first half. Right from the opening scene, it’s loud and action-heavy, a big shift from The Silence of the Lambs. Thankfully, it starts to find its footing later on, and by the end, the atmosphere comes much closer to what made the original so gripping. It’s not a bad film by any means, but overall it doesn’t quite reach the same level as its predecessor. Anthony Hopkins is, as always, phenomenal — radiating the same chilling calm and control that define Hannibal. The recasting of Starling actually works well, and since the story takes place years later, her development feels believable and fitting.

Anthony Hopkins makes Hannibal Lecter a character you can’t look away from. His calm manners and the violence he’s capable of are such an unsettling combination. Hannibal has a darker, more extravagant atmosphere than The Silence of the Lambs, with Florence giving it a distinctive beauty that makes the horror feel even more disturbing. Julianne Moore brings her own strength to Clarice, while Hopkins remains the main attraction. Some moments push things very far, especially toward the end. It’s a strange, gruesome film, but certainly a memorable one.

Better than the book (which concludes with an inexplicable and really inexcusable character turn for Clarice). Still, basically one long cat and mouse game featuring Hannibal as the mouse instead of the cat. Nice performances all around, and great direction, but the basic problem is the book itself--It's simply far inferior to Silence of the Lambs

As I understand, Jodie Foster didn't agree with the direction of this sequel, which is why she opted out of returning. Unfortunately, I just didn't feel the same character connection with Moore filling the role. Not terrible, but not great. The ending is always awesome, but I wish they'd casted a better fit for Starling.

Hannibal is such an evil guy he’s good. Anthony Hopkins is superb playing the role of a cultured cannibal. You wind up rooting for him over the FBI!
