The script is what makes this movie excellent. I'm impressed this movie is still culturally relevant 31 years later.

Before Sunrise beautifully captures the magic of two strangers connecting through honest conversations during a chance train journey

Proof that a film doesn’t need a thousand plot twists, action-packed scenes or a million things happening to be an incredible film. Two strangers who connect and have conversations and interactions that are so simple yet so profound. You forget you’re watching two actors and feel as they’re two people meeting for the first time, their glances, their gestures... A wonderful film that touches the soul. Straight to my favourites ones!

Great movie, I love how it points out how men and women think differently about the same topic.

I absolutely love this movie. Ethan and Julie works so well together and the movie just carries beautifully with all their talking and how they engage each other. The chemistry of the speaking comes so naturally at no point did you ever feel that there was no chemistry. The direction and how it shot not only at the countryside and in the cities, but how when they are walking and how they are at tables together really builds a great movie. This is what the 90s were and it’s too bad things like this don’t happen anymore. I remember seeing this in the cinema when it came out and it all a special place in my heart. It’s just one of those great movies you can go back to and always find new little things.

I watched this the next morning after watching Before Sunrise. As I mentioned in that review, I wish I had let it settle a but before taking on the next two installments. When this film starts, I thought for sure that I was being set up for a dramatic final reveal as to who showed up at their original scheduled rendezvous and who didn’t.  That notion is wiped away almost immediately though and instead with we follow Jesse and Céline processing their regret and pondering their own what if’s. How real are our memories of our past loves and lovers? What if their memories don’t line up with our own.  Though I was at first disappointed in the way Before Sunrise somewhat undercuts the open-ended ending of the first film, I think it makes perfect sense in this exploration of romanticism vs pragmatism. Hawke and Delpy effortlessly reprise their roles; and again the uninterrupted long takes and naturalistic dialogue just completely invests you from start to finish. I’m not as big a fan of the ending here. While technically open ended again, I think Linklater is much more clear with his intentions on what happens next.

A film that seems to be about very little, yet quietly reveals itself to be about everything, Before Sunrise carries a heartbeat you can almost feel through the screen. It’s a tender celebration of romance, optimism, and human connection. Completely absorbing from start to finish, it stands as one of the most genuinely romantic films of modern cinema.

A very beautiful, slow moving, romantic movie, with two leads who make you feel so comfortable watching them. A brilliant movie.
