A social misfit, Willard is made fun of by his co-workers, and squeezed out of the company started by his deceased father by his boss. His only friends are a couple of rats he raised at home, Ben and Socrates. However, when one of them is killed at work, he goes on a rampage using his rats to attack those who have been tormenting him.

Utterly brilliant movie making without today's pretentiousness and PC preaching. The young man mistreated by all the adults around him finds friendship with a creature most of us abhor and despise. Beauty and the Beast tales have nothing on Willard. Alienation and loneliness find companionship with a "monster". Brilliantly metaphorical movie, the metaphor presented so simply that most critics miss the whole point of the movie and babble literal nonsense about it. The young Bruce Davison is scintillating in the role, creating emotional nuance and ambiguity and a promise of what he's capable of in complex character roles. Loved rediscovering the movie here.
