There’s (rightfully) a lot of time spent reminiscing on the almost 30-year history of the franchise. But they also weigh down the motion of the film by introducing a bunch of characters that, for the most part, don’t add anything to the movie (except for Tramell Tillman who deserves his own spinoff).
It takes too long to get to them but the stunt set pieces are stunning. The idea of Tom Cruise fighting to destroy AI through elaborately choreographed stunts at the highest highs and deepest depths of the Earth feels like the right statement to an industry facing a potentially existential threat.
All together it’s not the sendoff to the greatest living stuntman I was hoping for, but there are still moments that absolutely make it worth the watch.
