This hilarious show was originally on ITV, not the BBC as another reviewer claims. Spy spoofs tend to vary in quality, from the wonderful 'Carry On Spying' to the dire 'Austin Powers' and 'Johnny English' movies. In 1974, David Jason landed his first lead role, as incompetent British secret agent Edgar Briggs. It is not a rip-off of 'Get Smart'. Briggs has more in common with 'Frank Spencer' than 'Maxwell Smart'. The world he operates in is more like Callan's than Bond. There is visual comedy aplenty, meaning the show was popular at the time with youngsters ( and even made it onto the front cover of an edition of Look-In ). As the spy fad had ended by 1974, it was not the hit it deserved to be, and Jason would be next seen on the box in 'Lucky Feller'.
