I went into Exodus: Gods and Kings fully expecting a train wreck, especially with the cringy throwback vibe of casting a bunch of British actors as Egyptians. But after I was able to get past that, I found it to be a fun take on the Exodus story. The film offers the question of whether Moses was truly divinely inspired, or if he was just grappling with a mental illness—either interpretation feels plausible, and planting this seed of doubt is a really interesting interpretation. Visually, though, it’s hard not to appreciate the way it brings ancient Egypt to life, offering an exhilarating glimpse of what the civilization might have looked like at its height.
