A grieving couple retreat to their cabin in the woods, hoping to repair their broken hearts and troubled marriage, but nature takes its course and things go from bad to worse.
The conditioning & condemnation of woman per a man, per a man First of all, this is some of the most traumatic material and dialogue in cinema. Also some of the most traumatizing physically on screen….and emotionally cauterized as a result. Then we have what is obviously the greatest animatronic of all-time saying obviously the greatest two word verse since “Jesus wept.” S-tier horror moment. Lars Von Trier is a goddamn master of opening films. The first 10 minutes are so gorgeous, so haunting, so real. It’s probably 1b to Melancholia’s 1a, but damn is it close. Also such an artist with the atmospheres he develops. They envelop you in his distinct visions and make the location seem otherworldly and dreamlike. One of his most cinematographic films. Just absolutely stunning all-around. Love the disorienting use of multiple types of cameras/film for the hiking/nature scenes. The visual space and sound mixing is so unsettling it is incredible. It functions perfectly for the tone it’s trying to set. Lastly, enjoyed his use of meta-narratives once again with the therapy session at the beginning of Chapter Three. Lars REALLY likes filming naked women bathing in the brightest lights which like…..who can blame him but still
