Solid entry in the franchise. McKenna Grace continues to shine as a standout, it’s a great character and McKenna does an excellent job as Phoebe. Paul Rudd can do no wrong, in my book. His boyish charm is ever present and continues to be one of the best casting decisions for this franchise. Thought it was very cool to see Dan Akyroyd get a sizable role in this one. As one of the original writers, original cast, and someone that had been wanting for years to relaunch the franchise, Ray’s enthusiasm for busting ghosts on the screen felt like genuine emotion man behind the character.
The film is much heavier on the callbacks to the original film. Characters, cameos, ghosts, locations….all that was a bit much this time around. Some of them feel shoehorned in more than others. Personally, my favorite nods to the original film are usually the most understated ones, a musical cue or a camera move. There’s an establishing shot of the New York Library mimics the camera move from the original. I much prefer those subtle nods to the one’s that beat you over the head.
Had a really fun time. Decent action with a good balanced mix of practical and digital effects. And I think it’s a really enjoyable cast, even if it gets bogged down by having a few too many characters each with their own B plot. I would sign up for more Ghostbusters films if they made them, though. I’m ready to move on from the constant nostalgia play. Now that the franchise has been re-established it’s time to move on and tell an original story.
