The show recreates famous crimes from the 1920 to the early 1970's talking to principle people involved in the crime coverage and investigation. The stories are narrated in the first person, usually by a female persona, as though the narrator was an outside observer at the time (a neighbor, townsperson, etc.). The narrator's persona is never directly identified as an actual person from the event however

God, I loved Michelle MacNamara. I know how it is to be on alotta drugs and her overdose and undiagnosed heart condition both together, killing her basically in her sleep. It was classed as an accidental overdose, but that heart condition she didn't know about didn't help. I think she was so gorgeous and smart. She basically caught the long island serial killer. The show I'll be gone in the Dark is the book she was writing when she died. It's such a good documentary her husband finished it for her and made the documentary. She'll be missed R.I.P. lovely Michelle. She was married to that comedian guy. I can't remember his name. But she's the only reason I watch the first 2 seasons of this cause she died during filming of the beginning of the 3rd season, I believe
