Easily one of my most watched films of all time. I absolutely wore out multiple VHS copies of this as a kid. But my niece and nephew, while familiar with Star Wars lore thanks to some books, games, toys, etc, they’d never actually seen the movies. (They’re kind of scaredy cats when it comes to anything even remotely intense. They don’t even own a TV, so they don’t really watch much of anything except when they come to our house or my parents house.) True story: We joke a lot that my nephew literally couldn’t finish Cars 2 because it was too “scary.”
But they had been asking to watch Star Wars, so we all sat down together during Thanksgiving this afternoon and we all watched this. Still kind of takes my breath away at times. Such a briskly paced sci-fi adventure. I just adore the way the script is written and how the characters talk. They reference events, gadgets, people and places without ever explaining to the audience, which helps the universe to feel truly lived in. And I’m not sure there has been a dialogueless character who’s as well written as R2-D2. Sheer brilliance. I really wish Lucasfilm would get their sh🤩 together and release a f🤩king movie at some point.
