An aging jockey aims for a final championship, when a rookie rider arrives claiming to be his son.
A familiar story that is elevated by some stunning cinematography and a poignant lead performance from Clifton Collins Jr. An aging Jockey who’s body’s wear and tear has to come to grips with the end of his riding career. Seriously this is a gorgeously lit movie, with spectacular sunset vistas, dancing silhouettes lit by fire light, frames lit by cigarette light. Really beautiful stuff. And while the story feels familiar, as I mentioned, it’s not necessarily predictable. I really loved Molly Parker in this. She and Moises Arias are both excellent in support roles. The themes of family and legacy are beautifully echoed with the horses as well. Horse names are often derived directly from the parents.  Out of Russo’s Lamentation and Dido’s Mercy, you get Dido’s Lament….OR sometimes you just name the horse Hello Sunshine for reasons that have nothing to do with parentage.
