Toy Story

Toy Story
A cowboy doll is profoundly jealous when a new spaceman action figure supplants him as the top toy in a boy's bedroom. When circumstances separate them from their owner, the duo have to put aside their differences to return to him.

Ok, so I've been thinking about this a lot (because I've seen this movie 8 or 9 times over the last year and a half).
Do the toys drop into motionless toy mode as an involuntary physical response (that can be overridden with effort as seen multiple times in the series) or as a conscious choice for their safety and the greater good?
If it's the latter, there's absolutely no way a Buzz Lightyear would play along. If it's the former, why does he not just ignore the impluse every time since he doesn't believe he's a toy and thus doesn't believe its necessary. Or does he not notice blacking out frequently? In which case how do any of them resist that sweet pull from oblivion?
Anyway, still an amazing movie chock full of great lines, big laughs, and memorable moments.
