Fort Apache

Fort Apache
Owen Thursday sees his new posting to the desolate Fort Apache as a chance to claim the military honour which he believes is rightfully his. Arrogant, obsessed with military form and ultimately self-destructive, he attempts to destroy the Apache chief Cochise after luring him across the border from Mexico, against the advice of his subordinates.

“Fort Apache” is a John Ford Western featuring two of the finest actors he ever directed. Fonda plays Thursday with cold conviction—not a villain, but a man ruined by his certainty. Wayne, in contrast, is steady and perceptive, showing respect for the Native people. The film reflects on leadership, legacy, and America’s tendency to elevate flawed men into heroes. It questions the myths of the genre even as it embraces them, offering more to those willing to look beyond the uniforms and gunfire.
