Better than The Crazies, townspeople have gone mad after some poisoned wine makes then kill their loved ones. The undead(?) aren't technically zombies yet they move and look like the sort. Faces are covered in pus filled sores oozing disgusting bodily fluids. Rollins isn't afraid of showing the gore. In fact there's one death scene that has shot up to one of my all time favorites- a man crucifies his wife's nude corpse on a door and then decapitates her and carries around her severed head. Absolutely brutal shit.
As usual with his films they're stunning to look at. His style in how they're shot, framed, and production sets are incredible. Honestly gives me a light Ingmar Bergman vibe. Brigitte Lahaie moves stunningly onscreen in sheer white among ruined buildings with a guard dog on each side of her before stripping nude- it's a marvel of a picture to experience.
