The Fantastic Four: First Steps

The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Against the vibrant backdrop of a 1960s-inspired, retro-futuristic world, Marvel's First Family is forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, while defending Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer.

I wanted to like this movie more than ended up being the case. To be clear, I still enjoyed it and it's certainly entertaining, but it just felt like it didn't quite take the step needed to reach the next level of movie. The best part is undoubtedly the humanity of the main characters and their chemistry as a family. They're likable and that's all pulled off with a lot of heart. The plot is where this stumbles for me. Galactus is one of the grandest antagonists in all of Marvel, but he felt very one-dimensional here and there was just no real substance to his portrayal. The supposed stakes of what was going to happen were dire, sure, but the film just somehow didn't FEEL like the stakes were really high. Ultimately, I think this worked pretty well as a stand-alone movie, but it doesn't feel like it fits in at all with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I guess we don't get to see the tie-in until "Avengers: Doomsday".
