Netflix’s Squid Game (2021) is a gripping thriller that blends survival drama with social commentary, creating one of the most compelling TV experiences in recent memory even if we are all sick in the head for enjoying it. Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the South Korean series follows 456 desperate contestants who enter a deadly competition for a massive cash prize, only to realize that losing means certain death. The protagonist, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), is a debt-ridden gambler who finds himself competing alongside others in similarly dire circumstances. The series does an excellent job of developing its characters, making their fates all the more impactful. Don’t get too attached to ANY of the characters. The show will absolutely wreak you and you will thank them for it.
