Killer clowns wreaking havoc on a small town and slicing up delinquent teens. If that’s up your alley than Shudder’s “Clown in a Cornfield” is just the film for you! The film is by director Eli Craig whose vision is gleeful menace and just the right amount of tongue-in-cheek irreverence, the film delivers exactly what it promises.
Set in the small, decaying town of Kettle Springs, the story follows a group of high school outsiders caught in a brutal game of cat-and-mouse when a murderous clown named Frendo begins picking off townsfolk in increasingly inventive—and grotesquely satisfying—ways. What sets this apart from your typical masked killer flick is the sharp undercurrent of satire. The film pokes fun at generational divides, small-town conservatism, and social media panic with wit as sharp as Frendo’s chainsaw.
While the characters might lean into archetypes (the rebellious new girl, the jock, the YouTube-obsessed best friend), the cast injects enough charm to keep you invested. The script never forgets to have fun, and the pacing keeps things zipping from one scare (or gag) to the next. The kills are inventive and shot like the punchline to a joke. One involves a character who is convinced they are going to die despite their friends trying to reassure them only to next run straight into a waiting chainsaw. Another great scene involves 3 of the main characters crouching in a cornfield with each girl covering the others mouth to keep quiet only the girl at the end mouth is actually covered by the killer clown.
Bottom line: Clown in a Cornfield is a gory, goofy rollercoaster with a sly sense of humor and a killer instinct for horror fans who like their frights served with a snicker. It’s Scream meets Terrifier.
