This movie recounts the adventures of M. Gustave, a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune - all against the backdrop of a suddenly and dramatically changing continent.

Loved pretty much all of the visuals. Beautifully and meticulously framed as always, but this is definitely most I have enjoyed his general aesthetic. Enjoyed pouring over the details in each frame. Also, really loved Fiennes performance along with Revolori. Glad tonfinally cross this off the Shame List. And while I think it’s probably my favorite of his films thus far, I still feel largely the same about all of them. I appreciate the craft and the construction, but I find I’m seldom moved emotionally by any of the story. Can’t put my finger on it, but I just always feel emotionally flat watching his films. Maybe it’s the deadpan, the flat camera angles, the voiceover narration, the frequent story within a story structure…not sure. I definitely enjoy the craft. Like popup storybooks come to life.
