A once-celebrated kid detective, now 32, continues to solve the same trivial mysteries between hangovers and bouts of self-pity; until a naive client brings him his first 'adult' case to find out who brutally murdered her boyfriend.
I really really enjoyed The Kid Detective. Its off-beat, dry sense of humor had me laughing thoroughly from start to finish. Adam Brody is pitch perfect as a small town private detective that never lived up to his potential. He’s faced with the pitying glances of the townsfolk on a daily basis as they are unable to see past his unrealized expectations. However, a new case gives him an opportunity to earn redemption. The Kid Detective is a compelling mystery, a teenage-coming-of-age drama (where the teenager is thirty-something), and a daft comedy—all rolled into one. A thoroughly satisfying movie watching experience and one of the funniest comedies I’ve seen in quite some time. One that gets even better on rewatch. Sophie Nélisse’s character Caroline is played with this kindness and wide-eyed naïveté and it's a great contrast to Adam Brody’s disaffected and cynical Abe. I love all of the callbacks to characters and cases from Abe’s childhood cases. I will keep hoping in futility that they turn this into a franchise.
