Detention

Detention
This comedy/horror movie centers about a group of teens who go to Grizzly Lake High School. When one of their classmates is killed by someone dressed up as 'Cinderhella' (a character from a popular horror movie), they all fall under suspicion, but when they all get detention, they try to work out who it is.

There’s lots to like about this wild, frenetic, genre bending, pseudo slasher. Tons (and I mean TONS) of 90’s references and film references, off beat humor and creativity here. That being said, it’s a little odd that I didn’t like this more. Mostly, I think it’s because the first half didn’t quite work as well as the second half. The first half is so scattershot with the fast pace edits, lightening fast dialogue that I felt like I had whiplash—which could have been a great thing if all of the jokes had landed for me, but they just didn’t. When we get to the second half, though, and start to mix in the body-swap time travels aspects, that’s when this started to take off for me. I’m a sucker for time-travel flicks so no surprises there. I thought the killer was fairly obvious, but I can’t fault the movie for my own genius. Overall some stuff really worked and some stuff really didn’t but I really admired the creativity. Has me really curious to check out Kahn’s other features.
