The film follows a girl named Madison Penrose, spoiled throughout her life to the extent that she convinces her parents to re-open Rollerdome for her Sweet 16. Obviously, the Rollerdome once closed because a series of brutal murders took place at the locale, and, of course, the killer comes back to wreak havoc during her party.
MTV original slasher film - slash - parody of an MTV original reality series. What I was hoping out of this was some solid slasher elements, nostalgic sound track and some spoof-y teen drama. We sort of get all of those elements, just not quite the ph balance I was looking for. This leans heavy into the My Super Sweet 16 (parody? Not really) once the opening kill is out of the way. I’d estimate the next 45 minutes is purely the teen drama. Thankfully, Lauren McKnight was really stellar as the lead and our link to the legacy of the Lord of the Rink killer from the opening sequence. I’m pretty sure MTV was contractually obligated to use Limp Bizkit‘s Nookie in everything produced during a certain time period, so it’s inclusion here was no surprise. I actually didn’t recognize most of the other needle drops save for Tubthumping.
As for the slasher elements, there’s some flashes of greatness, but I was also left wishing for more. Some of the kills are effectively gruesome. I loved the one that finished in the cake. That was a great moment. At the same time, I’d say about half of the kills happen off screen (or partially off screen). It definitely felt like those decisions were results of making sure this can still be played on cable television.  Additionally, one of the most violent kills in the film was instantly revealed to be not real.  Cool that it we got that moment, but ultimately pointless. I’ve heard the sequel makes for a better slasher, and this definitely did enough to get me interested in checking that one out. Outside of the opening sequence and the last 15-20 minutes of this though, which were really enjoyable, this didn’t quite live up to my (perhaps unfairly) lofty expectations.
