28 Days Later

28 Days Later
Twenty-eight days after a killer virus was accidentally unleashed from a British research facility, a small group of London survivors are caught in a desperate struggle to protect themselves from the infected. Carried by animals and humans, the virus turns those it infects into homicidal maniacs -- and it's absolutely impossible to contain.

I watched 28 Days Later sigtnificantly after its original release date. I was very skeptical going into it because I knew how saturated the zombie genre had become after this movie, and I felt like I would not appreciate some of its tropes. In some ways, I was right. This movie created the playbook for the more aggressive and faster zombies, and a lot of it did feel familiar. However, I appreciated how the movie had slower moments, and the last act in particular felt more distinct. There are also some excellent needle drops throughout. The overarching plot will be what you expect, but the most memorable aspect of this movie is the grainy cinematography. It looks dated, and it probably looked dated even when it came out. I was initially not a fan of it, but I think it leads to it having a unique look that does the most work alongside the unique soundtrack in differentiating it from the rest of the pack. Couple it with a decent, albeit familiar, story and characters, and you have a solid movie still worth watching even if it doesn't necessarily feel like a horror classic.
