This anime spin off feels like a side quest in the Altered Carbon universe, fast, flashy and mostly here for the action.
Set on the neon drenched planet Latimer, it follows a freshly resleeved Takeshi Kovacs as he’s pulled into a Yakuza murder mystery while protecting a teenage tattooist.
The setup is classic cyberpunk noir, but the execution leans more toward kinetic spectacle than philosophical depth.
Visually, it’s a stunner. The animation style, somewhere between cel shaded video game and high end CGI gives the fight scenes real punch.
But emotionally? It’s a bit hollow.
The story hits familiar beats without much surprise and the deeper themes of identity, memory and morality that made the Original series so compelling are mostly sidelined.
Still, for fans of the universe, it’s a fun detour.
It expands the lore just enough to feel worthwhile and the Ghost in the Shell vibes are strong.
Just don’t expect the existential weight of the original series, this one’s more blade than brain.
