The much-anticipated return of Christian Wolff doubles down on the action but loses some of the quirky charm that made the original so compelling. It’s a slick, globe-trotting thriller that delivers on shootouts but feels less unique this time around.
The Good: The action choreography is once again top-tier, showcasing Wolff’s brutal efficiency with breathtaking clarity. Ben Affleck slips back into the complex role with ease, conveying Wolff's internal struggle with subtle precision. The film also successfully expands its mythology, giving us intriguing glimpses into the wider network of agents and fixers.
The Bad: As you noted, the forensic accounting that gave the first film its unique hook is largely sidelined in favor of more conventional espionage. The plot feels more convoluted and less focused, juggling too many threads without the tight narrative structure of its predecessor. Consequently, some of the supporting characters feel underserved and the emotional core isn't as resonant.
While an effective action vehicle, *The Accountant 2* feels like a ledger with the most interesting columns left blank, likely satisfying action fans more than those who loved the original's cerebral puzzle.
