As a medical team tries to understand 10-year-old Maya Kowalski's rare illness, they begin to question her parents. Suddenly, Maya is in state custody, and her family is desperate to bring their daughter home.
When the pitfalls of the American healthcare system intersect with the unintended consequences of the child welfare system, the result is a horrific tragedy. Pure bureaucraziness. Sooo many times I’ve had to take my kids to the emergency room, knowing exactly what’s wrong with my kids, but you have to sit there and wait for the docs to diagnose. Just to get a drug that I know will instantly ease their symptoms. All of my kids every time they got a cold, it would cause croup which in turn would narrow their airways. And every time like clockwork at 1am, they would begin to have extreme difficulty breathing. Requiring a trip to the ER because dexamethasone can’t be prescribed over the counter. We go, they do full exam, run x-rays, they administer the meds, we wait a couple hours for their breathing to return to normal and then go home. We would do all of this knowing we were going to be back the next night at 1am. With a whole new set of doctors to run through the same dog and pony show. There were times we went to the ER 8 nights in a row. On that stint, I definitely had the thought cross my mind about whether or not CPS was being alerted as to why our kids are in the ER every single night. The health care system is maddening and I could not imagine being Beata hearing a judge order that she is not allowed to hug her daughter.
