The Beast
In the near future where emotions have become a threat, Gabrielle finally decides to purify her DNA in a machine that will immerse her in her previous lives and rid her of any strong feelings. She then meets Louis and feels a powerful connection, as if she has known him forever. A melodrama crossed by the genre, which unfolds over three distinct periods, 1910, 2014 and 2044.

Conceptually, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind comes to mind although the execution is quite different and brought back feelings of Godard at his most experimental as in say Alphaville. It's seemingly this lush romantic tale centered around two protagonists engaged in a fatalistic journey for each other but it goes to a much more interesting and bittersweet place with a tragic yet ultimately less rose-colored reading of our human existence and the fragile, fleeting nature of finding happiness and or love. It pivots the source of tragedy from outside influences and an us against the world new wave ethos to an inward psychological flaw not unlike the tragedies of Yorgos and Haneke.
