Bring Her Back

Bring Her Back
A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother in this nerve-shredding possession horror from the breakout directors of Talk to Me.

In some ways its a very promising progression on some of the things I wished were stronger in Talk to Me, but in other ways Danny and Michael Philippou fall back into those same traps.
I liked that this was a much tighter movie thematically centered around what we allow grief to turn us into. And Sally Hawkins' performance really elevates the movie. But where Talk to Me had a very concise and explicit mythology I think the 'less is more' approach in this one was ambiguous to the point of being distracting rather than atmospheric and spooky.
It's still a good sophomore feature, and I hope the brothers keep learning and growing because I think it's still possible that a truly great horror movie is still forthcoming from them.
