Ellian is a tenacious princess who must go on a daring quest to save her family and kingdom after a mysterious spell transforms her parents, the King and Queen of Lumbria, into monsters.
Propelled by Zegler’s vocal performance and the goat, Alan Menken’s, songs and score. But at the same time there’s no songs or hooks that feel particularly catchy or memorable. I love the entry into the story as it attempts to tell the story of a girl growing up with divorcing parents—you know—when parents turn into monsters. It’s admittedly a cute way to analogize those heavy thematics in a children’s movie. The accompanying visuals, however, don’t really live up to the rest of the star studded talent. Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem, reunite (Being the Ricardos) only to separate in this movie again🥲. Worth a watch, but sadly doesn’t visually feel like it warrants a big screen theatrical run. Looks very much like standard direct to streaming animated movies and I don’t think the all-star cast really elevates it beyond that.
