Ranjit, a farmer in India, takes on the fight of his life when he demands justice for his 13-year-old daughter, the victim of a brutal gang rape. His decision to support his daughter is virtually unheard of, and his journey unprecedented.
When a 13 year old is gang raped after a family wedding in her small village, she wants to report the three “boys” to the police. When her father brings it forward to the community leader, they suggest a “compromise,” one that essentially the entire village supports. Rather than report the crime to the police, his daughter should marry one of her rapists. This is what they’re up against in finding justice. The decision to push forward with the police report is virtually unheard of. They face tremendous backlash from their village, victim blaming, and even death threats and makes the arduous 14-month long process practically untenable. But perseverance has the potential to drastically change the culture around rape prosecution in an area where an estimated 90% of rapes go unreported. Fascinating documentary that will make your blood boil at times. [spoiler ahead] I just want to say that they do get justice in the end. I was really worried while watching this that it would have a very bleak and sickening ending. I don’t think I could have stomached that so I wanted to put that put there. Highly recommend.
