Obsession, loneliness, and very very very awkward. Deep End exaggerates the often dangerous transition from adolescence to adulthood. Capturing a raw, almost voyeuristic view of youthful desire and disillusionment. The film thrives on its unpredictability, and doesn't meet the conventional coming of age narrative. Deep End feels cold because this just isn't how people react to these situations but what do I know, I wasn't living in 1970's United Kingdom. This kid is only 15 yet he's terrifying. As if torturing, stalking, and sabotaging this poor girl wasn't enough, the ending is a gut punch. A signature 70's finale. Shocking yet inevitable, reinforcing the themes of sexual repression and emotional isolation.
