As someone who never watched the original, I thought this was pretty good, but not masterful. The story isn't bad, but it felt simple and generic; the tropes the HTTYD story explores have become a lot more common and overused since its original release. I also thought the pacing was a bit too slow.
I will say though, the CGI for the dragons looks impeccable. I love how there are different dragons with different abilities, designs, and weaknesses. The characters are all good and well acted. The movie was a bit lacking in action, but the fight in the third act almost makes up for it with its sheer scale and epicness. Overall, 4 out of 5 stars, or 8/10
