This movie was so dumb and I loved every minute of it.
I saw The Accountant 2 so here’s the good and bad without spoilers
In case you’re unfamiliar with the first Accountant film
It features Ben Affleck as an Autistic savant accountant slash lethal mercenary
If that sounds like a lot - it is, but that’s also what made it interesting
The Accountant had this basic thriller structure but then all these unusual and unique choices layered in
The sequel definitely tries to continue that tradition
Specifically, by exploring the relationship between Affleck’s character and his brother played by Jon Bernthal
Yes, this movie gives you all the expected pot boiler stuff with heightened twists and violent shoot outs
But it also lets Affleck and Bernthal star in a buddy action two hander and the movie is most alive when they’re just hanging out
Mostly because Jon Bernthal has so much energy and charisma
His vibe against Affleck’s stoicism is delightful. The two of them have great chemistry
And they get a full emotional arc that felt relatable and satisfying
The movie is also pretty funny at times because of Bernthal
And maybe most surprising is that this blend of tones from tick tock thriller to action to buddy comedy actually worked. It never felt jarring.
That said, a lot of this movie is unintentionally funny with just how absurd and silly it is
Like the original, bring an extra large bag to suspend all of your disbelief in
We also don't see a lot of the accountant actuallying accounting in this one
I missed some of the math nonsense from the original
Instead he's kind of just a generic super merc who happens to be really smart
And then he and the story rely too heavily on his woman in the chair
And the villains are equally generic and vague
But bottom line, this is B movie fun done right
Thanks to game lead performances that know what kind of movie they're in
