Gosh they haven’t figured out how to screw up Count of Monte Cristo yet have they? This one is as epic and lush as any of the previous versions. The lead is appropriately intense with expressive eyes and all the supporting players shine. I liked that they leaned a bit more into the big con instead of the prison escape which is still my fav bit of the story. The novel which yes I read is a million pages so you do have to admire how well this one got it down to a swashbuckling exciting three hours.
The wooden masks were hard to accept. I mean no one would ever fall for such a mask would they?
Overall this might be the best film version of the much told tale.
This viewer mistakenly watched it in Italian with English subtitles and you cannot tell that the movie is actually in French.
