Really lovely animated movie. I think after seeing such high ratings and praise and briefly catching a glimpse of the trailer, I went in with the expectation that there would be some really deep themes about nature and humanity and have more realism, so I was a little disappointed on that front when the movie seemed to be aimed more at children, nonetheless this was still an amazing film I enjoyed. The animation is really good and has a serene quality to it. Roz as a robot is a very well developed character and it’s always great when a movie can get you to empathise with it. Fink and Brightbill are also interesting, with a fun cast of side characters. The pacing is also great, getting right into the action from the beginning and never letting your attention get away. Although the themes and story beats are quite simple, they were still depicted in an original way and are often heartwarming, cute and riveting. I wasn’t aware before that this was based on a book, Dreamworks knocked it out of the park with this adaptation and I’m looking forward to the sequel. I always feel lame demanding a more serious tone from a kid’s movie, but I think if they tighten up some of the basic humour and develop more nuanced side characters, then the sequel has the potential to reach GOAT status for me.
