The Marvels

The Marvels
When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, Carol's powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol's estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe.

The heart of the film, the relationships between Carol, Monica and Kamala is where the film excels. Brie Larson, Iman Vellani and Teyonah Parris chemistry together works extremely well and it certainly helps to mask over some of the bad writing. There is some bad writing though. I don’t even necessarily fault the writers. I sort of feel like the MCU has become an increasingly difficult sandbox to play in as a result of some of the films and tv series we’ve had up to this point. Silliness and stakes have been escalated to the point where nothing is too silly to include; and the destruction of entire worlds don’t seem to hold any emotional weight. And I can’t seem to keep them all straight anymore. The stories feel hollow and without consequence even if I enjoy the time spent with the characters.
I really liked the switching places aspect and the manner in which it really forces the trio to come together and work as a team, but it really seemed super inconsistent as to when it would trigger a switch and with whom. I personally could have done without the singing planet segment and the overdone Flerken usage. Thankfully it didn’t come off as silly as Thor: Love and Thunder or Quantumania, so... a slight step back in the right direction for Marvel. It’s a great mid credit scene, too.
