Rick and Morty write the next installment of their favorite movie franchise. Pure cinema, broh.

Although this episode was obviously making fun of summer blockbuster movies and had some very funny moments, it seemed like it was still somehow promoting Superman’s release. Adult Swim is Warner Brothers, so is Superman. Then having James Gunn and Zack Snyder both in the episode playing themselves seemed a little too much like synergistic marketing and it turned me off. This episode wasn’t terrible, but it left a bad taste in my mouth for some reason. Even the season 3 premiere with all the Mulan stuff didn’t feel like they were trying to sell it. This felt like Dan Harmon being forced to be a whore for superhero movie, which he’s gone on record numerous times expressing his intense dislike for.
The story did have some fun bits with the movie franchise of robot trees who fight to save the world against a cactus man and his weed minions. When Rick and Morty get annoyed by the poor storytelling, Rick decides to portal to visit the director, James Gunn, to complain. When nothing gets resolved, Rick builds a machine that creates stories like ChatGPT. Something happens and Rick and Morty get sucked into the story a la Last Action Hero. They have to fight their way out by completing the story with the help of Jerry sitting at the machine, typing and grinding them to find a way out, all while James Gunn arrives at their house to steal the machine and craft the perfect stories.
This one was not as low as Rise Of The Numericons or How Poopy Got His Poop Back, but it feels cheaper and dirtier than the both of them combined in its obvious schilling for James Gunn. For the record, I have nothing against the guy. I love Slither, Super and enjoyed the Guardians Of Galaxy movies. I just want entertainment and not commercials masquerading as entertainment.
