Aap Jaisa Koi is a modern rom-com that thoughtfully explores the complexities of a May-December romance in today's society. It’s a heartfelt film that attempts to challenge patriarchal norms and celebrates love in its many forms, even if it occasionally stumbles in its execution.
The Good
R. Madhavan and Fatima Sana Shaikh's on-screen chemistry is undeniably strong, creating a believable and charming dynamic that grounds the central love story. The film's cinematography and production design are visually appealing, capturing the aesthetics of Kolkata beautifully. The script is commendable for tackling relevant themes like age-appropriate love, female sexual agency, and the nuances of patriarchal mindsets within a family-friendly narrative.
The Bad
Despite its noble intentions, the film's execution can feel heavy-handed, with its messaging sometimes coming across as preachy rather than subtle. The pacing is a significant issue, as it rushes through key emotional conflicts and their resolutions. The supporting characters, while well-acted, are often reduced to tropes and their subplots are not given enough depth, leaving the audience wanting more.
