Nathaniel Williamsen is taken to an island mission with his fiancee Sophie. Their ship, the Rona, is captained by the roguish Bully Hayes, who also takes a liking to Sophie. When Sophie is kidnapped by slave trader Ben Pease "Nate" teams with Hayes in order to find her.

Part nostalgia, part undying love for John Hughes, part rooting for the underdog - I love Nate & Hayes, flaws and all. The movie got buried by Paramount because they had Indiana Jones & The Temple Of Doom coming. They released it quietly and it sank into forgotten oblivion. There are similarities to Temple Of Doom, and many people think this film copied that one. But this movie was made first and ready to go while Temple Of Doom was still shooting. But the rope bridge and the sacrifice scenes are especially similar.
This is a fun romp that feels like the right kind of swashbuckling adventure film you just need as a pallet cleanser sometimes. Give it a shot, if you can find it.
