“Flame of Barbary Coast” drops John Wayne into the gambling halls of San Francisco, chasing both fortune and the woman of his dreams. There's a brief nod to his cowboy roots, a scene with cattle, but it quickly shifts to a world of showgirls, gaming halls, and schemers. It has a bit more plot than your average Wayne vehicle, but it’s no classic. Still, it’s an interesting detour for fans expecting saddles and spurs, only to find poker chips and dancing instead.
