Grim British exploitation flick with plenty of sleaze. Pete Walker pokes at moral hypocrisy, turning the women in prison formula into something colder and more punishing.
I have to say I don't think I've seen a premise of a DIY backyard female prison before and what an excellent one. Privately run for “morally wayward” women overseen by a sadistic ex-warden and his equally unhinged wife. It’s a nasty premise, and Walker milks it for all the grim tension he can through cold stone corridors, strict rules, and punishments that feel more Victorian than 1970's.
House of Whipcord channels real social fears about decency, punishment, and the illusion of moral superiority. It’s not subtle, but that’s how Walker plays.
