Helen Mirren, unrecognizable as Israeli prime minister Golda Meir, navigates the 19 day Yom Kippur War in this historical political thriller. Mirren gives a strong performance, but I never truly felt the tension even though the fates were balancing on a razor’s edge. The battle sequences play out on 2 dimensional maps, with newsreel montages and voiceover, and politicians listening to military radio communications in smoke-filled rooms. This direction works decently enough to portray the events, but for my taste it was completely lacking in tension.
