Young Woman and the Sea

Young Woman and the Sea
This is the extraordinary true story of Trudy Ederle, the first woman to successfully swim the English Channel. Through the steadfast support of her older sister and supportive trainers, she overcame adversity and the animosity of a patriarchal society to rise through the ranks of the Olympic swimming team and complete the 21-mile trek from France to England.

This is another one of those sports dramas that just hits all the right beats and nearly always works for me. Daisy Ridley and Stephen Graham were both very good. I’m sure the truth has been dramatized and Disneyfied beyond all recognition, but it certainly made for an inspiring and compelling watch. My only minor gripe was the final scene where Daisy cheesy smiling and waiving in front of an really obvious green screen ticker tape parade. Thought it was a kind of a visually unappealing scene to end on for a film that otherwise looked absolutely beautiful throughout.
