Two feuding siblings carrying on a heroic family tradition as Chicago firefighters. But when a puzzling series of arson attacks is reported, they are forced to set aside their differences to solve the mystery surrounding these crimes.
Ron Howard's films are always proficient in production. He's predictable in that every chance the shot will be framed and lit overdramatic. Combine that with soap level writing and you get a product that lacks any sort of personality and lasting impact. Backdraft is hilarious in how these firefighters are living this larger than life war hero societal outlaws type of lifestyle. A few instances certainly have some homoerotic undertones that will make middle aged moms moist. As unrealistic the character personalities are, the cast is really great. Even throwing a bone to the superior brother (to me) Clint in a small role. Even the fire is cast as a character portrayed as some sort of living monster. Backdraft is soapy and goofy though the killer subplot was pretty cool.
