An adorable slice-of-life drama with a twist! (The kids can become cute wolves!) The Director (Mamura Hosoda) loves his supernatural spins on typical situations but the happiest (and scariest) parts of this movie are profoundly grounded in relatable family stuff. Every time I expected some thriller-like twist to raise the stakes I was instead met with something simple and (ironically) way more impactful.
I will never forget this movie and recommend it to anyone. Summer Wars (2009) is good palette cleanser in case you want more fun without lasting profound reflections on life.
